The project evolved from theoretical discussions to a practical implementation addressing challenges related to legal frameworks, land acquisition and technological integration.

A Black Tupelo tree was planted on land donated by the Community College of Allegheny County. The project utilized blockchain and smart contracts to manage the ownership and care of the tree. The plan was to create a 501(c)(4) organization called the Pittsburgh Lobby for Tree Personhood, which advocates for legal recognition of the tree’s autonomy.

The project encountered legal, technological and administrative hurdles that highlighted the need to adapt the legal infrastructure to recognise non-human entities and that the potential of blockchain technology goes beyond financial applications. These challenges emphasize the importance of the project as an ongoing experiment to redefine the relationship between humans and the environment.

In this project we learnt above all that a legal subject can only be constituted through the recognition of the state and that there are very specific rules for defining a subject. And that was perhaps the most important thing for us: autonomy and agency are constituted primarily by a community.
